Organ and Church Acoustics

Since April 2011 our worshipping and music life at St Nicholas Church has been enriched by our new Combination Organ – one of only a few in the country – producing wonderful sounds, that inspire and encourage our praise and worship and complement the musical life of the church.

The three manual organ combines some new and some restored high quality traditional pipes with modern digital technology and stops which create a very flexible instrument capable of playing a wide variety of music. The original spectacular case in the West gallery combines speakers and restored pipes to provide a great opportunity for organists to sample, and to give recitals.

The well-recognised fine acoustic of the church enhances live music from sizeable orchestral to small chamber group, vocal or instrumental.  By the same token the combination of pipe and digital organ sounds are at home with a very wide range of music.  Visiting organists very soon cease to take notice of the difference in their registration.

The church arranges a full programme of Sunday instrumental and voice afternoon concerts throughout the year, free of charge with voluntary collection in aid of the upkeep of the church, and with interval teas available.  The church is also available for hire by choral or instrumental groups for their own rehearsals, concerts or occasions, or for organ recitals.  For enquiries about the organ please contact our Church Administrator.  For hire of the church please see the Hire a Room section of this website.
